 Peranakan Chinese and Baba-Nyonya are terms used for the descendants of late 15th and 16th-century Chinese immigrants to the Indonesian Archipelago andBritish Malaya (now Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore).Members of this community in Melaka, Malaysia address themselves as “Nyonya Baba”. Nyonya is the term for the women and Baba for the men.Peranakan cuisine is often refereed to as Nyonya Cuisine. Nyonya is a word used to affectionately addresss a lady with prominent standing in society.Examples of some popular Peranakan or Nyonya dishes are Fish Head Curry, Ikan Asam, Babi pongteh, Ayam Buah keluak, Sambal Belachan, Sayur Lodeh, Achar, Babi Chin, Ayam pongteh, Chincalok, Bakwan Kepiting, Itek Siow, Ayam Siow, Nonya Curry,Pedas, Achar, Nasi Kuning, Ayam Tempera, etc. Popular nonya deserts would be apom balek, the numerous kuehs available, kueh lapis, agar agar jelly.
